Convertible Term Life Insurance

Convertible term life insurance gives you temporary coverage now with the option to convert some or all of it into permanent coverage later, depending on the policy rules.

Coverage now, with the door to permanent coverage left open.

A conversion right is a clause in a term policy that lets you exchange it for a permanent policy from the same carrier, without answering new health questions, before a stated deadline. You are buying term insurance and an option at the same time.

The option is worth very little in a year when nothing goes wrong. It is worth almost everything in the year you are diagnosed with something that would make a new application difficult or impossible. That asymmetry is the whole product.

What the conversion right actually gives you.

The carrier agrees, in advance, to issue you permanent coverage on request, using the health class you were assigned when the term policy was underwritten. Not the health class you would qualify for today. The one you locked in at thirty-one, when you were running and nothing hurt.

The premium on the new permanent policy is based on your age at conversion, which is higher, sometimes considerably. What you avoid is the underwriting. That is the trade, and for someone whose health has changed it is not a close call.

The four questions that determine whether it is any good.

Conversion rights are not interchangeable. Two policies with identical premiums can have wildly different options attached, and the differences live in these four places:

  • The deadline. Some policies allow conversion for the full term. Many stop at a set age, often 65 or 70, or after ten years, whichever comes first.
  • The eligible products. Some carriers let you convert into anything they sell. Others restrict you to one designated conversion product that may not be one you would have chosen.
  • Whether the whole benefit converts, or only part of it. Partial conversion is common and useful, letting you move some coverage to permanent and let the rest run out.
  • Whether riders carry across. Living benefits and waiver of premium sometimes do and sometimes do not.

Who should care about this.

Younger buyers, because their health is currently at its best and they have the most years for it to change. Growing families whose obligations have not finished taking shape. Anyone with a family history of something that runs in families.

And people who suspect they may want permanent coverage eventually but cannot justify the premium today. Convertible term is the honest answer to that situation. It does not pretend the permanent policy is affordable now. It just refuses to close the door.

The cost of the option.

Sometimes convertibility is priced into the premium and sometimes it comes at no visible cost, depending on the carrier and the product. Where it costs something, the difference is usually small relative to what it protects against.

The thing to avoid is discovering, at forty-eight, that the cheap policy you bought at thirty-three was cheap because it converts into nothing.

Common questions

Do I have to answer health questions to convert?

Often no, and that is most of the value. Many convertible policies allow conversion without new medical underwriting. Whether yours does, and until when, is written into the contract. Read it before you need it.

Does convertible term cost more?

Sometimes slightly, sometimes not at all. The option has value, so it is fair to expect it to be priced. Whether it is worth it depends on how likely you are to use it, which is another way of asking how confident you are about the next twenty years.

Can I convert only part of the policy?

Usually yes. Partial conversions are common, which lets you move some coverage to permanent and let the rest expire with the term. Availability depends on the carrier.

What will the permanent policy cost?

It is priced at your age when you convert, using the health class from the original underwriting. Older, so more expensive than it would have been. But priced as though you were still as healthy as you were the day you applied.
