Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance
Guaranteed issue life insurance is designed for people who may have a hard time qualifying for other coverage. It typically does not require medical exams or health questions.
How this coverage works
The carrier accepts everyone within an age band, without an exam and usually without health questions. It manages the risk with a waiting period instead.
During that period, typically two or three years, death from natural causes generally returns premiums rather than paying the benefit. Accidental death is usually covered from day one.
Who this coverage may be good for
- People with serious health conditions who have been declined elsewhere.
- Anyone for whom the alternative is no coverage at all.
What to consider before choosing it
- It usually has lower coverage amounts and costs more per dollar of benefit.
- The waiting period is the mechanism that makes it possible. Understand it before buying.
- If you can qualify for simplified issue, that is almost always the better deal.
Common questions
Am I really guaranteed to be approved?
Within the age band the carrier accepts, generally yes. That is the one place in life insurance where the word guaranteed is doing honest work, and it is paid for with the waiting period.
What happens if I die during the waiting period?
For natural causes, most policies return the premiums paid, often with interest, rather than the full benefit. Accidental death is usually paid in full. Read the specific contract.
Should I try for other coverage first?
Almost always. Guaranteed issue is the last resort by design, and if simplified issue will take you, it will take you for less.
